At a yakiniku restaurant, it is worth checking the sauce and the rest of the menu as well as the meat itself.

This guide explains what to check when you eat yakiniku, and what to look at on Halal Gourmet Japan listing pages.

Yakiniku and teppanyaki

Yakiniku is Japanese barbecue: you cook bite-sized pieces of meat yourself on a grill or hot plate at your table, then eat them with sauce or salt. Some restaurants use charcoal in a small clay stove called a shichirin.

The yakiniku list on Halal Gourmet Japan also includes teppanyaki restaurants, where a chef cooks the meat on a hot plate in front of you. The cooking style is different, but the things to check are the same.

Wagyu refers to cattle breeds

Wagyu refers to breeds of cattle developed in Japan. Brand names such as Kobe beef and Omi beef are based on where the cattle are raised and the standards they meet. Neither term tells you how the meat was slaughtered.

Halal meat is meat slaughtered and prepared in accordance with Islamic law. Wagyu can be halal or not, so whether a restaurant uses halal meat is something to check separately from the breed or brand.

Some restaurants name their meat supplier in their listing. Wagyu teppanyaki steak house Kiyomizu SOU, near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and Steak Nagomi, near Todai-ji Temple, both say they serve teppanyaki steaks made with wagyu from Sanda Meat Corporation, a halal-certified supplier.

The same restaurant may serve pork and other meats

Yakiniku menus often include pork and chicken as well as beef. Horumon (offal) can also come from either cattle or pigs.

Even at a restaurant that uses halal meat, not every item on the menu is necessarily halal. Where pork is also served, the same kitchen and utensils may be used for preparation. Some of our listings show “Serves Halal Meat” without showing “Pork-Free.” Please ask the restaurant which dishes are made with halal meat.

Sauces and marinades

Yakiniku sauce is usually made from soy sauce combined with sugar, fruit, garlic and other ingredients, and some recipes add mirin or sake. Among seasonings called mirin, hon mirin (true mirin) is counted as an alcoholic beverage under Japan’s Liquor Tax Act. Our guide to what to check before you order sushi, ramen and tempura explains this in more detail.

At some restaurants, the meat is rubbed with sauce before it is served. In that case, the sauce ingredients are already on the meat even if you skip the dipping sauce.

You can also choose between salt and sauce at some places. Halal Yakiniku Zerohachi Namba OCAT says it serves halal Akage wagyu and Kobe beef with several original salt blends and its house-made sauce. Wagyu Volcano OAGARI,Arashiyama is known for halal wagyu seared and finished with its house-made special sauce, and its listing says “No alcohol used.”

Halal meat may need a reservation

At some restaurants, halal meat is prepared only for advance bookings. The Originator of Teppanyaki Steak Misono Kobe main store says that halal Kobe beef requires an advance reservation and partial prepayment. Halal Kobe beef is available only at the Kobe main store.

What to check on the listing page

Under “Conditions” on each listing page, these five items are the most useful when choosing a yakiniku restaurant:

Halal Certified

Serves Halal Meat

Pork-Free

Uses Halal Seasoning

Dedicated Halal Kitchen & Tableware

Restaurants that do not serve alcohol also show “No Alcoholic Drinks.” For the seasonings used in sauces, check whether “Uses Halal Seasoning” is shown, and read the restaurant’s description below “Conditions” as well.

Some listings show nothing under “Conditions.” If a listing says “The halal status of this restaurant has not been verified by Halal Gourmet Japan,” its information is based on publicly available sources. If anything is unclear, please ask the restaurant.

What to ask at the restaurant

If the listing page does not answer your question, ask the restaurant. Asking about specific ingredients, rather than about a dish as a whole, usually gets you a clearer answer.

Which dishes use halal meat?

Is pork or pork horumon on the menu?

Do the sauces or marinades contain mirin or sake?

Is the meat prepared in the same kitchen or with the same utensils as pork?

Do I need to book in advance to order halal meat?

Finding a yakiniku restaurant

You can browse all our yakiniku restaurants, and Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka each have their own page as well.

Yakiniku restaurants

Yakiniku restaurants in Tokyo

Yakiniku restaurants in Kyoto

Yakiniku restaurants in Osaka

We also feature wagyu restaurants in our Tokyo guide and our Osaka and Kyoto guide.

Before you go

Information on our listings may change at the restaurant’s discretion. Please check menus and arrangements on the linked pages and with the restaurant on site.

Each listing page describes the restaurant’s halal arrangements (certification, ingredients, kitchen, and so on). Please read the listing and decide whether it meets your own standards.

To wrap up

At a yakiniku restaurant, check the sauce, any marinade and the rest of the menu, not just whether the meat is halal. Reading the listing page and the restaurant’s description first narrows down what you need to ask. Once you have found a place you would like to try, check its halal arrangements on the listing page before you go.

Featured image (yakiniku cooking over charcoal): RuinDig/Yuki Uchida / CC BY 4.0 / Wikimedia Commons

This article was written by the Halal Gourmet Japan team.
