Living in Japan, sooner or later you will want halal meat, or the spices and sauces you used to cook with back home. The same goes for travellers who cook for themselves or are looking for gifts to take home.

But searching for “halal shop” in a maps app does not always turn up a store nearby.

This article shows two ways to find the stores listed on Halal Gourmet Japan: near where you are right now, or by prefecture. We also cover how to check products at supermarkets and convenience stores when there is no store nearby.

What you will find on the Store page

Besides restaurants, Halal Gourmet Japan lists shops under the “Store” category. As of 13 October 2026, there are 48 of them across 12 prefectures.

Alongside halal grocers, they include butchers, Japanese sweets shops, Japanese tea shops, souvenir shops, and shops selling bento and side dishes. Some are inside Haneda Airport.

Find stores near you

On the Store page, choose “Near current location” in the Location field and search. Stores are listed with the closest first. If your browser asks for your location, allow it.

You can also see the results on a map.

Find stores by prefecture

These are the prefectures with stores listed. Tokyo has the most, with four in the Hyakunincho area of Shinjuku alone.

Shopping at supermarkets and convenience stores

If there is no halal grocer nearby, you will be buying from ordinary supermarkets and convenience stores. Few food products in Japan carry any halal labelling, so you need to check the ingredients list.

The Halal Gourmet Japan app has a feature called Halal Lens. Scan a product’s barcode or ingredients list, and it gives a three-level result for ingredients you may want to avoid. This article explains how to use it.

For gifts, some shops have a section for halal-certified products. This article introduces the one at Don Quijote in Kabukicho, Shinjuku.

Before you go

Details can change. Please check opening hours and regular days off on each store’s listing, and ask the store about what they currently stock.

Each store’s listing shows its halal details, such as certification. Please read the listing and decide whether it meets your own standards. The same goes for Halal Lens results: the final decision is yours.

To wrap up

We do not list as many stores as restaurants yet. During your stay, or in your first weeks after moving here, bookmark the Store page and you can find a store close by in no time.

If a store you often use is not listed, please tell us through “Request a restaurant” on the list pages. It will help the next person who comes looking.

If you need somewhere to pray while you are out shopping, see this article.
