Biryani, Curry and the Depth of Pakistani Spice
Pakistani restaurants are among the most reassuring finds for Muslim travelers in Japan. Halal Gourmet Japan's Pakistani page features restaurants across the country, including ones registered as certified halal, ones registered as Muslim-owned, restaurants with prayer spaces and restaurants that serve no alcohol.
In Osaka, one restaurant describes itself as having the world's largest curry menu, serving over 600 Pakistani dishes and a biryani recognized as Japan's best by the president of the Japan Biryani Association. Another Osaka listing describes sourcing all of its meat, vegetables and spices from Pakistan, selling halal groceries in-store and offering a good-value buffet on Fridays.
In Tokyo, you can find spicy curries from the Punjab region and homestyle Pakistan-Arab cooking. In Saitama, a restaurant that describes everything it serves as halal is also registered as certified halal, with a prayer space and no alcoholic drinks. In Fukuoka, a restaurant using its own blend of freshly ground garam masala recreates the flavors of the owner-chef's hometown of Karachi, down to menus served at Pakistani weddings and parties, and describes its meat as prepared according to Muslim teachings.
Vegetarian options are registered at listings around the country as well. Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to combine restaurants and prayer places along your route.
