Aichi: Nagoya's Local Flavors, with Places to Eat and Pray
Aichi sits at the heart of central Japan. Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine and the lively Sakae and Osu districts anchor the city, and the local food culture known as Nagoya meshi — miso-simmered udon, hitsumabushi grilled eel and more — gives the region a flavor all its own. With Chubu Centrair International Airport as its gateway and a location midway between Tokyo and Osaka, Aichi fits naturally into a longer journey through Japan.
In central Nagoya, Halal Gourmet Japan features a halal Wagyu ramen restaurant in Sakae that keeps its whole kitchen free of pork, lard and alcohol and offers a prayer space with wudu facilities, a restaurant described as the only Moroccan restaurant in Nagoya serving tagine and couscous, an Uzbek restaurant introduced as Nagoya's first with plov, lagman and manti on the menu, and Turkish kebab restaurants run largely by Muslim owners and staff that describe themselves as using only halal ingredients. Near Nagoya University, there is also a curry house run by a Japanese Muslim owner and popular with international students.
Japanese flavors are part of the experience too: a long-established restaurant serving miso-simmered udon, the noodle dish Nagoya is famous for, a restaurant grilling live eels from Mikawa Isshiki over binchotan charcoal, and a karaage fried chicken specialist from Aichi registered as certified halal. For souvenirs, look for alcohol-free, meat-free shrimp crackers from a maker founded in 1866 with allergy information in English on the package, and a store that describes itself as carrying certified halal souvenir items and Muslim-friendly sweets. Indian and Nepalese curry houses, many describing their dishes as made with halal meat, are found across the prefecture, along with a shop delivering halal foods in and around Nagoya.
For prayer, Aichi's listings include Nagoya Mosque and Nagoya Port Masjid, along with mosques in cities across the prefecture such as Toyohashi, Ichinomiya, Toyota and Seto. Prayer spaces are listed at Chubu Centrair International Airport (with qibla direction and wudu facilities), the Nagoya Sakae Mitsukoshi department store, the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, and AEON MALL Tokoname and AEON MALL Nagoyachaya, so it is easy to fit prayer around sightseeing, shopping and flights.
Wander Sakae and Osu for food and shopping, visit Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine for history, then head out toward the Chita Peninsula or the Mikawa area. Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to find restaurants, mosques and prayer spaces near each stop, and build an Aichi itinerary that includes both meals and prayer.
