    About Iwate

Iwate: Hiraizumi's Golden Hall and the Home of Wanko Soba

Iwate, in Japan's Tohoku region, is home to the World Heritage temples of Hiraizumi — including the golden Konjikido hall of Chusonji — and to the Geibikei Gorge, famous for its human-powered river boat ride between towering cliffs. The prefecture is also the birthplace of wanko soba, a playful local tradition of eating soba noodles served in one small bowl after another.

On Halal Gourmet Japan, you can find a long-established soba restaurant, founded in the Meiji era, that has developed Muslim-friendly wanko soba with a mirin-free sauce cooked in separate pots — a phone reservation at least three days before your visit is required for the halal version. The listings also include a hotel restaurant near the Geibikei boat pier that serves pork-free, alcohol-free meals and says it uses certified halal seasonings, as well as a spot with vegetarian options.

For prayer, the listings include Morioka Masjid, as well as a gender-separated prayer space with wudu facilities, prayer mats and a qibla inside a hotel three minutes' walk from the Geibikei boat pier. Checking these locations on the map in advance makes it easier to combine them with Hiraizumi and the gorge.

Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to line up meals and prayer along your route, and enjoy Iwate's golden temples, river gorges and bowl-after-bowl soba tradition at your own pace.
