Facing the Pacific on the Southern Side of Shikoku
Kochi faces the Pacific from the southern side of Shikoku, and much of its scenery is shaped by water: the clear Shimanto River, the long sand beach at Katsurahama, and a mountainous interior. In summer, a large festival fills the streets of the city.
Fishing has long been central here, on a coast washed by the Kuroshio current. Inland, rivers run close to the mountains, with railways along the valleys and low bridges built to let floodwater pass over them.
