    About Nara

Nara: The Great Buddha, Deer Park and Ancient Streets

Nara is where Japan's ancient capital survives in the open air: the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple, free-roaming deer in Nara Park, Horyu-ji Temple with some of the world's oldest wooden buildings, and the machiya townhouses of Naramachi — all an easy train ride from Kyoto or Osaka.

Nara stands out on Halal Gourmet Japan for listings that speak about halal certification. A few minutes' walk from Todai-ji, a teppanyaki restaurant describes serving Wagyu beef sourced from a certified halal meat supplier; near Kintetsu Nara Station, a sukiyaki specialist describes using only certified halal beef and keeping a separate set of cookware and tableware for Muslim guests. A 90-year-old ryokan restaurant on Mount Shigi describes Wagyu shabu-shabu and sukiyaki made with certified halal beef, and a ramen shop that describes itself as the first in the prefecture to obtain halal certification serves its bowls in an Arabian-styled room with Turkish mosaic lamps and tables of Yoshino cedar.

Other listings include a rich beef-broth ramen topped with A5 halal Wagyu, a mochi shop in the shopping arcade famous for its high-speed mochi pounding — which lists its ingredients as simply glutinous rice, mugwort, sugar, salt, red beans and soybean flour — an Indian restaurant directly connected to Oji Station that uses neither beef nor pork, an Indian restaurant in a renovated 100-year-old traditional house, a Muslim-owned Turkish restaurant, and a sushi restaurant that describes using halal-friendly vinegar and offering sushi-making experiences.

For prayer, the listings include Nara Masjid, which has a women's prayer room, wudu facilities and parking, along with prayer spaces at JR Nara Station, the Nara City Sightseeing Information Center, the NARA Visitor Center & Inn near Sarusawa Pond, and facilities in the Naramachi area. Checking these on the map in advance makes them easy to combine with Todai-ji and Nara Park.

Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to line up meals and prayer along your route, and take in the Great Buddha, the deer and the old streets of Nara at your own pace.
