Saitama: Little Edo Kawagoe and Neighborhood Mosques
Just north of Tokyo, Saitama is an easy add-on to any Tokyo itinerary. Its best-known destination is Kawagoe, nicknamed "Little Edo" for its streets of clay-walled kura warehouses, while the Chichibu mountains offer nature within day-trip range of the capital.
In Kawagoe, Halal Gourmet Japan features a teppan restaurant that describes its menu as domestic halal beef and organic vegetables grilled on an iron plate, with private rooms, a prayer space and views of the historic warehouse streets. The listings also include a long-established sushi restaurant that traces its founding to 1878 and has a prayer space, and a soba restaurant on the old merchant street, so you can plan a Japanese meal around your stroll through Little Edo.
Indian and Pakistani cooking is a strength of Saitama's listings: an Indian restaurant at Saitama-Shintoshin that describes its dishes as guided by Ayurvedic principles, a curry diner serving nan made from Gunma wheat and a curry tsukemen created with a well-known ramen shop, and a Pakistani restaurant in Yashio registered as certified halal that describes everything it serves as halal. There is also a Muslim-owned halal grocery that delivers across Japan.
What sets Saitama apart is its many mosques rooted in local communities. The listings include Saitama Masjid, Kawagoe Masjid, Al-Huda Masjid in Tokorozawa, Madina Mosque in Toda and Jamea Masjid Yashio, among others, along with a musollah in Warabi.
Combine the warehouse streets of Kawagoe, the mountains of Chichibu and quick access from central Tokyo. Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to find restaurants and mosques near each stop, and build a Saitama trip that includes both meals and prayer.
