Shizuoka: Mt. Fuji, Onsen Coasts and the Tokaido Road
Stretching between Tokyo and Nagoya along the old Tokaido route, Shizuoka offers views of Mt. Fuji, the onsen resort of Atami, the beaches and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, Lake Hamana, and some of Japan's most famous tea country — easy to weave into almost any itinerary by shinkansen or expressway.
Halal Gourmet Japan features listings built around Japanese food culture: a hotel in Atami that describes serving authentic kaiseki cuisine certified halal, with dedicated tableware for its halal dishes; a sushi restaurant that describes using certified halal vinegar, soy sauce and miso, preparing the local specialty sakura shrimp tempura with utensils reserved for Muslim guests, and offering a tatami prayer space with handmade mats crafted from kimono and obi sashes; a Japanese restaurant serving its signature kamameshi (pot rice) alongside a roast beef bowl described as made with halal-certified beef; and a vegan and halal Massaman curry spot with blended herbal teas chosen from 21 herbs.
There is also a Muslim-owned Turkish restaurant that describes using only halal ingredients throughout its menu. On the Tomei Expressway, the Hamanako and Ashigara service areas combine restaurants offering halal options with prayer spaces, which makes Shizuoka an easy prefecture to cross by car — and on the Izu Peninsula, a seaside restaurant serves flavors from the mountains and the sea.
For prayer, the listings include mosques such as Shizuoka Masjid, Fuji Masjid, Mohammadi Masjid in Hamamatsu and Toki no Sumika Mosque, along with prayer spaces at Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport, Gotemba Premium Outlets and the Kakegawa Kachoen flower and bird park. Qibla direction and wudu facilities are noted on each page.
Use the Halal Gourmet Japan map to line up meals and prayer along your route, and enjoy Mt. Fuji views, onsen towns and the Pacific coast at your own pace.
